Insights
Getting an interview is a great first step, but in today’s competitive job market, preparing generic answers and hoping for the best is no longer enough. Employers are increasingly looking beyond a candidate’s CV. They want to understand how you think, how you communicate and, importantly, how you would fit into the role and wider team. If you have an interview coming up, here are some areas worth focusing on.
Know More Than the Job Description
Reading the job description carefully is essential, but your preparation should go further. Take the time to understand the company, its services, recent developments and the wider sector it operates in. Think about why the role exists and what challenges the successful candidate may be expected to solve. The stronger your understanding of the business, the easier it becomes to give relevant and considered answers. At Link Personnel, we guide you through the whole process, providing interview prep before your interview. Call 01 845 6312 NOW!
Give Examples, Not Just Statements
Saying that you are “organised”, “a good communicator” or “work well under pressure” is easy. What employers really want to know is how you have demonstrated these qualities. Instead of simply saying you are good at managing deadlines, talk about a situation where you had multiple competing priorities, what you did and what the outcome was. Specific examples make your answers more credible and memorable.
Don’t Underestimate Communication
For many roles, technical experience is only part of the picture. Employers are also assessing how clearly you communicate, whether you listen to the question being asked and how confidently you explain your experience. You don’t need to have a perfect answer to every question. Taking a moment to think before responding is often better than rushing into an answer that doesn’t properly address the question.
Prepare for the Questions You Want to Be Asked
You cannot predict every interview question, but you can prepare the key areas you want to communicate. Think about the three or four strongest aspects of your experience that are particularly relevant to the position. Then make sure you have clear examples ready to demonstrate them. This gives you flexibility during the interview without making your answers sound rehearsed.
Have Good Questions Ready
An interview is also an opportunity for you to understand whether the role is right for you. Avoid finishing with “No, I think you’ve covered everything. Instead, prepare a few genuine questions about the role, team, expectations and opportunities available. Good questions can also demonstrate that you have thought seriously about the opportunity.
Interviewing in 2026 is about more than simply having the right experience on paper. Employers want to see evidence of your skills, understand the contribution you could make and get a sense of how you communicate and approach challenges. So before your next interview, don’t just practise your answers. Research the organisation. Know your examples. Understand your value. And be ready to have a conversation.
