Top Tips for Succeeding in a Video Interview in 2026

Video interviews are now a standard part of the recruitment process. Whether you’re applying for your first role, looking for a promotion, or making a career move, there’s a good chance your first interview will take place online.

While interviewing from home may feel more relaxed than meeting in person, it’s still your opportunity to make a strong first impression. Taking the time to prepare can help you feel more confident and allow you to focus on showcasing your skills and experience.

Know the Technology

Most employers now use platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Make sure you know which platform you’ll be using and log in 10–15 minutes early to check for updates.

Before your interview:

  • Test your camera and microphone.
  • Ensure your internet connection is stable.
  • Charge your laptop or keep it plugged in.
  • Close unnecessary applications to improve performance and avoid distractions.

Create a Professional Interview Space

Choose a quiet, well-lit room where you won’t be interrupted.

Position your camera at eye level and ensure your face is clearly visible. A tidy, neutral background works best, and natural lighting can make a big difference. If possible, avoid sitting directly in front of a bright window, as this can make you appear in shadow.

Remember to switch your phone to silent and turn off desktop notifications before the interview begins.

Research the Company

Candidates are expected to know more than ever before.

Take time to research:

  • The company’s website.
  • Their recent LinkedIn posts and news.
  • Their values and culture.
  • The role and how your experience aligns with it.

Having a few questions prepared at the end of the interview also demonstrates genuine interest.

Dress for Success

Even if you’re interviewing from home, dress as you would for an in-person meeting.

Professional attire helps create the right impression and can also boost your own confidence.

Finish Strong

Before the interview ends:

  • Thank the interviewer for their time.
  • Reiterate your interest in the role.
  • Ask about the next steps in the recruitment process.
