Insights
The way people look for jobs has changed significantly. While sending a CV and waiting for a response is still part of the process, candidates who want to stand out in today’s market need to be more strategic. Employers and recruiters are seeing more applications than ever, while technology, AI and changing expectations are influencing how candidates are assessed. So, what can you do differently?
Stop applying for everything
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is applying for every role that looks remotely suitable. A more targeted approach is much more effective. Look at the skills and experience the employer is actually looking for and consider whether your background genuinely matches. A smaller number of well-targeted applications will usually be more worthwhile than dozens of generic ones.
Make your CV work harder
Your CV has one job, to get you noticed. Recruiters often make an initial assessment quickly, so your most relevant experience needs to be easy to identify. Rather than simply listing responsibilities, focus on what you achieved. Small changes can make a significant difference.
Don’t ignore LinkedIn
Your LinkedIn profile is increasingly part of your professional presence. Make sure your job title, experience and key skills are up to date and consistent with your CV. A professional photograph and a clear headline can also make your profile more credible. You don’t need to become a daily LinkedIn poster. Simply having a strong, up-to-date profile means recruiters can find you when suitable opportunities arise.
Be prepared to explain your career moves
Candidates should expect questions about their career history. Why did you leave your last role? Why are you looking now? Why have you changed industries? What are you looking for next? There is nothing wrong with having moved jobs, taken time out or changed direction. What matters is being able to explain your decisions positively and confidently. Think about your career story before the interview rather than trying to explain it for the first time on the day.
Know your salary expectations
Salary conversations can be uncomfortable, but avoiding them completely can create problems later. Before starting your search, research what similar roles are paying and consider your own experience, responsibilities and expectations. It’s also important to look beyond basic salary. Bonus, pension, hybrid working, annual leave, flexibility and progression can all contribute significantly to the overall package.
Use recruiters strategically
A good recruitment consultant can offer more than access to advertised vacancies. Recruiters can provide insight into what employers are looking for, advise on your CV, discuss salary expectations and introduce you to opportunities that may never be publicly advertised. Building a relationship with a recruiter in your area of expertise can be particularly useful if you’re not actively looking but would consider the right opportunity. Take the time to understand what you want, present your experience clearly and make sure your professional profile reflects where you want your career to go. And remember, you don’t have to navigate the process alone.
