Your CV is still one of the most important tools in a job search — but the way recruiters read CVs has changed.
Recruiters can receive dozens, sometimes hundreds, of applications for a single position. That means your CV needs to do more than list where you have worked. It needs to quickly communicate what you can do, what you have achieved and why you are relevant to the role. On the lookout, give Link Personnel a call now on 01 845 6312!
Recruiters want to understand what you are doing now. Make sure your most recent position is clearly explained, with enough detail to demonstrate your responsibilities and level of experience. There is no need to give equal space to a role you held 15 years ago and the position you currently hold. Your CV should reflect where you are in your career today.
One of the most common CV mistakes is simply listing duties. Instead of only saying what you were responsible for, think about what you achieved. Where possible, include results, improvements, projects or achievements.
A good CV doesn’t need to be completely rewritten for every application, but it should be relevant to the position. Look carefully at the job description. What skills and experience is the employer looking for? If the role focuses heavily on stakeholder management, project coordination or client relationships, make sure those areas are easy to identify from your CV if you have that experience.
Your CV doesn’t need to be covered in graphics or complicated formatting. In fact, simple is often better. Clear headings, consistent formatting, sensible spacing and concise bullet points make it much easier for a recruiter to quickly understand your experience. Think about your CV from the reader’s perspective and can they find the information they need within a few seconds?
Your CV and LinkedIn profile don’t need to be identical, but there shouldn’t be obvious discrepancies. Make sure your job titles, dates and key areas of experience are consistent. Your LinkedIn profile can then provide additional information about your career, interests and professional achievements.
