Tackling Job Descriptions in 2026: What You Need to Know

Finding a job today is easier than ever, but understanding what employers are actually looking for isn’t always straightforward. Many job descriptions are packed with long lists of responsibilities, technical requirements and desirable skills, making it difficult to know whether you should apply.

The good news? You don’t need to tick every single box.

1. Focus on the Essentials
Start by identifying the core requirements.

Ask yourself:
Do I have experience in the main responsibilities?
Have I worked in a similar industry or environment?
Do I meet the key qualifications or technical requirements?

Many job descriptions include phrases like “excellent communication skills,” “team player,” or “ability to work under pressure.” These are important, but they’re rarely what determines whether you’ll be shortlisted. Instead, concentrate on the skills and experience that appear repeatedly throughout the advert. Those are usually the employer’s priorities.

2. Tailor Your CV to the Role
Many employers now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to organise applications before they’re reviewed by a recruiter or hiring manager.
That means your CV should clearly demonstrate how your experience matches the role.

A few simple tips:

  • Use keywords that naturally appear in the job description.
  • Highlight your most relevant achievements.
  • Make sure your recent experience is easy to find.
  • Avoid copying the job description word-for-word—show how you’ve delivered similar work instead.
  • A tailored CV is far more effective than sending the same version to every employer.

3. Think Beyond the Job Description
A job description tells you what the employer wants, but it doesn’t always tell you what it’s like to work there.
Before applying, consider:
Is there flexibility or hybrid working?
What opportunities are there for progression?
Does the company culture suit you?
Will the role help you develop your career?
The right move isn’t always the role with the longest list of responsibilities, it’s the one that aligns with your career goals.

4. Speak to a Recruiter
A good recruiter can often provide insight that isn’t included in the advert.

They may be able to tell you:

  • What the hiring manager is really prioritising.
  • Which requirements are flexible.
  • Why the role has become available.
  • What salary and benefits are available.
  • How to position your experience most effectively.

That information can make a real difference when deciding whether to apply.

Job descriptions can seem overwhelming, but don’t let them discourage you. Focus on the key requirements, tailor your CV, and remember that employers are hiring people, not perfect checklists.
If you’re unsure whether a role is right for you, or you’d like advice on your CV or current opportunities, our team is here to help.
