Moving jobs in January 2016

Is your New Year Resolution to find a better job in 2016? You aren’t alone. There is now a confidence in the jobs market that has been absent for a number of years and clearly shows that people are no longer happy to just have a job, but want a good job. Furthermore their expectations are higher now than in the recent past that they can get one. From my experience, if you are looking to up sticks there are few better times in the year to move than right now.

There are 3 main reasons which traditionally make January an extremely busy time for recruitment. Firstly, while companies are often distracted by Christmas parties and year end financials in December, the beginning of the year brings a closer evaluation of staffing requirements. Departments which had been ticking along decide that for the new year, ticking along isn’t going to cut it and that a fresh intake is needed to drive business forward. Secondly, January is often the time when recruitment budgets are signed off for the year. This is especially relevant to the Irish operations of multinationals. Budget proposals are submitted to HQ and if they get their wish, come January, purse strings are loosened and under resourced areas of the business can be properly staffed. On the demand side, human nature plays a big part in making January a month full of opportunity. This is the time of year that people take stock of where they are and where they’re going. Many decide that to get the job they want, they need to go! Letters of resignation are handed in, and as a result more opportunities arise to fill the vacated positions.

The good news is that if you are looking to move job this year, there is plenty of opportunity. Unemployment, at 8.9% on the last count, is expected to fall further and wages, which have been restrained over the last few years, are expected to increase modestly. Hiring will take place across the board, with construction, manufacturing, and services all increasing staffing levels. 2016 should also see employment growth in a number of new and exciting areas including the Green Energy sector. This industry is attracting more and more investment and its’ growth is a particularly heartening aspect of a changing Irish economy. Green jobs are sustainable and necessary for the economy to grow in the future. They bring employment opportunities for skilled workers and allow us to cut our imports bill. If we want to live decent lives and make proper use of the resources we have been given, then the move to the so called “green economy” is something to be welcomed.

The outlook for 2016 as a whole is very positive, but experience teaches that if you want to move jobs this year, you should strike while the weather is cold and the iron is hot. Happy New Year!
